Korean Morphology with Elementary Two-Level Rules and Rule Features

Although the existing models for two-level morphology have several merits, they also have some limitations. In morphologically complex languages like Korean, it is not easy to develop FSTs that encode very complex two-level rules that can be innnitely generated. And, because lexical idiosyncrasy is encoded by introducing arbitrary diacritics into the lemma of the lexicon, lexical representations tend to be arbitrary. In this paper, we propose a combination model for two-level morphology especially eeective for highly agglutinative languages like Korean. In this model, the small number of two-level rules can produce the innnite number of mappings between a surface-level and a lexical-level, and lexical idiosyncrasy can be easily expressed by using rule features. The two-level model with combination is formally described in this paper, and an algorithm for morphological analysis and synthesis is also presented.
